What is a parklet? These are pavement extensions that allow for more space and amenities for people using the street. They typically extend out from the pavement and are installed over parking spaces. The main intent is to offer a place for people to stop, rest and sit while taking in the activities of the street.
Over the course of the next three years parklets across Bangor and Newtownards have been approved. The approval consists of locations at Regent Street in Newtonwards and High Street and Main Street in Bangor. In reference to Main Street, Bangor, a council representative said it will not detract from local buildings nor will it be a dominant feature, being a relatively small 2 metre by e11 metre space. The impact on road safety has been fully considered. Two parking spaces are to be lost on the street, but this is not considered a big loss due to the proximity to alternative parking. The same applies to High Street. The Newtownards Parklet is planned to be 7.3 metres by 3.3 metres, for public seating and planters.
