Bungalows!

Bungalows are a common sight for sale on the property market in the UK, but why are these single floor homes so popular? Historically they began growing in popularity in the early parts of the 20th century, then having a boost in demand after the second world war being built as temporary ‘prefabs’ that ended up remaining into the 21st century. While commonly thought of as a stereotypical British style of home, bungalows are incredibly popular in the likes of Australia and South Africa.

But what are the benefits to home buyers today? The most common, and obvious, of these answers in the accessibility of them as they lack stairs. As of 2022 there are 4.8 million disabled people in the United Kingdom and a population that is aging rapidly, this makes for huge demand to level-access living. It’s also common for people who have retired in their 50s to opt to purchase a bungalow for better current access, but also as a preparation or later in life. They’re also considered easier to adapt to needs such as widening walls, wheelchair accommodation and vertical and horizontal extension (subject to planning).
